Young Leo Stannard recently played at the Union Chapel in London alongside Maverick Sabre, Tom Odell, Rae Morris and Lewis Mokler in front of 1200 people “It was a crazy lineup”, he claims. Not the sort of thing the average teenager can say they’ve accomplished by the age of 17. Stannard is also set to play at the Secret Garden Party, later in the year, with big names such as Regina Spektor, Modestep and Django Django. Having started playing the guitar at the age of nine, Stannard developed an interest in different styles of music. He eventually took it upon himself to create his own style based on his influences. He claims, “I just thought it would be a good thing to do.” He eventually found fame on the internet when he performed an acoustic session with RTTV, a song he composed himself called “Please Don’t”. It was here, just under a year ago, where his talent was discovered by his manager Mark Murdoch, the founder of Mahogany Blog, which focuses more on filming artists in more intimate live sessions. “I always wanted to do music, I just never thought I’d be good enough to do it” said Stannard. His determination to stand out from the rest has pushed him to do so in the only way he knows how, through music. This stemmed from his hometown, where he grew up. “I was born in Leicester and moved to a place called Ragdale. There was absolutely nothing going on where I live.” He used this as his opportunity to write songs without any distractions. “I just want to get out and do something… instead of getting an average job,” Stannard said. “The first gig I went to was Newton Faulkner. It was amazing because I'd never really seen anyone play the guitar in that way before.” It seems Stannard takes his influences from artists who like to stand out and destroy their limitations. Ben Howard is known for his alternative ways of playing, for example, laying the guitar down on his lap and tapping at strings in sequence. Leo Stannard has adapted this and added his own twist to many of his own songs. Stannard’s voice, like Ben Howard’s, is unique and is hard to compare to any other. Jacob Coleman, lead singer of ‘The Good Life’ played alongside Stannard when he was in a band called ‘The Camrades’. “Leo is a nice, genuine guy, I’ve played alongside him in a band he was in previously. I think he was about 15, 16 maybe at that point. But anyway, I could tell by the standard of the songs that he was writing then that he was a talented musician with a big future.” However, Stannard does prefer to be the frontman when it comes to being in a band. He says being in the band was hard. “I was writing quite a lot of stuff at the time but the band didn’t want to play much of it so it was frustrating.” He didn’t know it at the time, but going solo was probably the best decision he made. Next up for Stannard is to release his own debut EP. He is currently working on the contracts for recording at Abbey Road studios, “We’re coming up with this unique sound,” he says. One of the main influences behind his songwriting comes from folk singer-songwriter, Damien Rice. Stannard claims Rice’s “Songwriting is miles better than anyone else’s.” When it comes to his own music, however, originality is key. He plans on staying away from mainstream music. When asked what separates him from everyone else he replied “I suppose I’m completely honest with the music I write, I’m inventive with my songwriting, combining different genres.” However he does eventually want to sign a record deal. “I think we have to do it in order to progress to the next level”, he says when it comes to finding that point between chart music and indie/alternative music. “People like Tom Odell have bridged the gap very cleverly. Sometimes it works” Stannard currently has a few gigs booked in Poland and a gig in Prague after stating, “I would love to travel around, especially with my music”. For now, however, Stannard confirms however that he is “going to put together a band very shortly, basically the solo stuff with a backing band”. He is determined to continue down the path of music as a career, so much so, that he is dropping out of school to move down to London and work on his music. “I just want to focus on music. I am going to drop out, I am going to focus on my music”. Source: http://scapegrace-uk.blogspot.com.br/2013/04/interview-with-leo-stannard.html
