Peggy was born Margaret Battavio in Lansdale Pennsylvania, on March 7, 1948. Her family were second generation immigrants; three of her four grandparents were Italian, one of her grandmothers was Pennsylvania Dutch. There was no musical tradition in the house. No singing at family get-togethers. Peggy began performing at the age five, she sang in front of her first audience at womens' auxiliary meeting.
At some point in late 1961 or early 1962, Peggy acquired a manager, Russel Smith. Their relationship soured, but he made the all-important contact with Hugo (Peretti) and Luigi (Creatore), joint heads of RCA's pop A&R team. A pianist was scheduled to show up for her audition but didn't appear, so Peggy performed a cappella. Hugo and Luig were impressed.
They signer her on the spot. It was the spring of 1962. Peggy was thirteen years old.
On January 22, 1974 Peggy gave birth to a daughter, Sandy, and back to the USA.
